How to Unblock Netflix, BBC iPlayer & More with a VPN
Access geo-restricted content from anywhere in the world. A guide to using VPNs for streaming without buffering.
Why Streaming Services Are Geo-Restricted
Streaming platforms don't own all their content globally. They license shows and movies from studios for specific regions. A show available on Netflix US may not be licensed for Netflix UK, and vice versa. Platforms use your IP address to determine your location and show you only the content licensed for your region. A VPN changes your apparent location, giving you access to other libraries.
Netflix — Accessing Multiple Libraries
Netflix actively blocks VPNs, but premium VPNs like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark regularly update their servers to stay ahead of Netflix's detection. Connect to a US server for the largest Netflix library (5,000+ titles). Other great Netflix libraries include UK (BritBox originals), Japan (anime), and Canada. If a server doesn't work, try another server in the same country — VPN apps often have dedicated streaming servers.
BBC iPlayer
BBC iPlayer is free but restricted to UK residents. It uses a combination of IP checking and cookie tracking to enforce this. To access it, connect to a UK VPN server before visiting the BBC iPlayer website. You may need to create a free account if you don't have one (use a UK postcode). NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark all reliably unblock BBC iPlayer.
Disney+ and Other Platforms
Disney+ has region-locked content too. The Star section (included in Disney+ outside the US) often has content not available in the US library. Connecting to a UK, Australian, or Canadian server unlocks these titles. For Hulu (US only), you'll need a US server and a Hulu account. Amazon Prime Video is similar to Netflix — different regions have different libraries.
Tips for Better Streaming Performance
For the best streaming experience with a VPN: choose a server close to the streaming service's region for lower latency; use the WireGuard protocol for faster speeds; connect to dedicated streaming servers if your VPN offers them; enable split tunneling so only your browser or streaming app goes through the VPN; and if you experience buffering, switch to a different server in the same country.
