What Is a VPN?
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a service that encrypts your internet connection and routes it through a secure server in a location of your choosing. When you connect to the internet through a VPN, your real IP address is hidden and replaced with the VPN server's IP address, making it appear as though you're browsing from that server's location.
How Does a VPN Work?
When you activate a VPN, it creates an encrypted 'tunnel' between your device and a VPN server. All your internet traffic travels through this tunnel, where it's encrypted before leaving your device and decrypted when it reaches the server. This prevents anyone — your ISP, hackers on public Wi-Fi, or government agencies — from seeing what you're doing online.
What Does a VPN Protect Against?
A VPN protects against several key threats: it prevents your ISP from monitoring and selling your browsing history; it secures your data on public Wi-Fi networks where hackers may be listening; it hides your location from websites and services; and it allows you to bypass geographic restrictions on content. It does not, however, protect you from viruses, phishing attacks, or make you completely anonymous.
Do You Really Need a VPN?
You should strongly consider a VPN if you: regularly use public Wi-Fi at cafes, airports, or hotels; want to prevent your ISP from tracking your browsing; need to access content restricted in your country; value online privacy and don't want companies building a profile on you; or work with sensitive information remotely. For most people, a VPN is a worthwhile investment in their digital security.
