Our Methodology

How We Test VPNs

Every VPN we review goes through a rigorous, repeatable testing process. No sponsored rankings. No guesswork. Just data.

Step 1

Speed & Performance

We run hundreds of speed tests across multiple server locations, measuring download, upload, and latency to find the fastest VPNs.

  • Tests run from multiple geographic locations (US, EU, Asia)
  • Download, upload, and ping measured via Ookla Speedtest API
  • Each server tested at off-peak and peak hours
  • Results averaged across 10+ runs per server location
  • WireGuard, OpenVPN, and proprietary protocols each tested separately
Step 2

Privacy & Security

We analyze encryption standards, logging policies, audit reports, jurisdiction, and advanced features like kill switches and DNS leak protection.

  • DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak tests on every platform
  • Kill switch tested by forcing abrupt connection drops
  • Logging policy reviewed and cross-referenced with audits
  • Jurisdiction and data-sharing agreements analyzed
  • Encryption ciphers, handshake, and HMAC authentication verified
Step 3

Streaming & Unblocking

We test access to major streaming platforms across regions to verify geo-unblocking capabilities and reliability.

  • Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and Amazon Prime tested
  • Tests run weekly to catch platform crackdowns
  • Multiple server locations tested per platform
  • Consistency tracked over a 30-day window
  • Both browser and native app access verified
Step 4

Value & Features

We assess pricing, server coverage, device limits, customer support quality, and additional features to determine overall value.

  • Pricing compared across monthly, annual, and 2-year plans
  • Simultaneous connections tested to verify advertised limits
  • Customer support evaluated via live chat response times
  • App interface and ease-of-use scored on all major platforms
  • Extra features (split tunneling, multi-hop, ad blocking) assessed
